We’ve all been in financial trouble at one point or another. After all, this economy – when most of us are struggling like never before – has seen the rise in gas prices, food prices, college tuition, and all the rest, but with no significant increase in pay. The money that it costs to live on a daily basis has to come from somewhere and for many us the only option is our credit cards. With credit cards maxed out and minimum payments through the roof – along with all of our other expenses – before long we are facing financial crisis. Bankruptcy may seem like the only alternative when it gets that far.
But as we’ve all been told, bankruptcy is more difficult to declare these days; and besides that, it is a decision that will stay on your credit report for many years to come. Taking back financial control of our lives – before bankruptcy is the only option – can have a much more powerful effect in our life and allow us to clean up our credit report without doing long term damage.
Debt consolidation loans can help to eliminate credit card debt; as can working with a professional that will provide debt negotiation or debt settlement – both methods by which to lower the total amount of the debt owed. But once credit card debt is eliminated, it may be tempting to get another credit card; a dangerous move that can result in the racking up further debt. Instead, an option to consider is the use of secured credit cards.
Secured credit cards are those credit cards that offer a limit that is only within the cardholder’s means. In fact, the credit card holder is only permitted to get a certain credit limit that they must first match in funds that are deposited in a secured savings account. This protects the lender and also allows the cardholder to take baby steps in using credit responsibly.

Things have changed; that much is certain. All you need to do is look around at what were once prosperous businesses and thriving communities and you can tell there is a recession that has hit us hard. Further proof, of course, is the fact that so many of us are struggling to pay our bills on a monthly basis and finding it difficult to do anything above and beyond our base financial obligations. Times are tough and when times are tough, the tough often turn to their credit cards. When cash flow is tight there aren’t a whole lot of options in terms of making it through on a day to day basis.
All of this juggling can really have an impact on our credit report. And since our credit report is ultimately what will determine whether or not we get the financing we need to buy that next house, get a car, or even get a loan to send our kids to college, we need to make sure we are up on what that credit report is saying about us and what we can do to increase our credit score.
The way in which consumers can set to work in ensuring their credit score and credit report are what they should be is through the procurement of a free credit report. Luckily, this is not difficult as receiving free credit reports are within the right of every consumer. More specifically, we are all allowed to receive one free credit report (from each of the three credit bureaus) within every twelve month period. So some people may request free credit reports from one of the credit bureaus, followed by another from another one of the credit bureaus a few months later – so that they are always on top of their credit report. And in light of this economy, we need to make sure we are holding up as strong as we can financially.

There are many people who may have come across their credit score at some point many months or even years ago when they were applying for a mortgage or other type of loan. And these same people may think that because their credit standing was okay then it is surely going to be okay now. But the truth is, that a credit report can change in an instant and often we are unprepared when we go into the next application process – faced with information we knew nothing of and facing the prospect of being declined for the loan.
The slightest change in your lifestyle can change your credit report and your credit score. Additionally, erroneous information can change your credit report, including those activities associated with identity theft (a more common occurrence now with our growing dependency on the computer and our propensity to store all of our personal information online).
In order to truly be abreast of what is going on with our credit report on a day to day basis we need – as consumers – to take better advantage of our right to get free credit reports. In fact we have the right to receive one free credit report from each of the credit bureaus that hold our financial information – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion – every twelve months. Which means, if we rotate between credit bureaus we could receive one free credit report every four months – giving us some insight into our credit standing and what we can do to make improvements; or at least validating to us that all is as it should be and there are no inaccuracies due to creditor error or identity theft.
With free credit reports we can ensure that there are no surprises when it comes to knowing where we stand and that we are always in control of our finances.

Most things in life go smoother with some preparation behind us; especially when it comes to financial events. Consider for example the process of buying a home, especially now when fewer and fewer consumers are being approved for a conventional mortgage. Before we go out, find that dream house, and set to work on the mortgage approval process, it makes sense to gather as much information as possible.
Under these circumstances, free credit reports can be enormously helpful in preparing us for the mortgage process – or any large financial transaction where we must be approved for a substantial sum of money.
Free credit reports can be requested from the three credit bureaus that are charged with gathering our financial information. Through one centralized website – www.annualcreditreport.com – consumers have the ability to request a free credit report from each, or all, of the credit bureaus; something that is our right to do at least once within every twelve month period. And this is something that is truly important for consumers to keep up with throughout the year as a free credit report can alert us to everything from inaccuracies to possible identity theft.
Prior to a mortgage transaction – or other financial transaction – a free credit report can tip you off regarding any possible obstacles that could stand in your way of getting the loan for which you are applying. Getting free credit reports ahead of time will give you the time that you need to identify any possible problems and resolve them in order to make the upcoming approval process and subsequent transactions go much smoother.
Part of being financially responsible is staying informed regarding your credit report. Staying on top of the details will ensure that you are in a position of power in any financial decision that you make now and in the future.

Everyone deserves a second chance in life. After all, how many of us can honestly say that we have not messed up at one time or another? The truth is that without the allowance of a second chance, most of us would be out of the game altogether in terms of a number of things. For instance, when it comes to our finances, there are few among us who have not found ourselves in a position at some point when we could use a little help and forgiveness. One or two poor financial decisions do not define us; we need to learn how to move on from our mistakes towards a much brighter financial future.
Helping us along in this capacity is a number of options available to us in terms of increasing our creditworthiness and inspiring lenders to once again have faith in our choices. There are a number of debt programs available to consumers for instance – developed in response to the skyrocketing debt in this country. Such programs will help consumers to pay down – and eventually pay off – their debt – and get back on their feet in terms of their credit score and overall credit report.
One of the other options available in terms of rebuilding credit one step at a time is the use of secured credit cards. Consumers may often find themselves in a position – following large amounts of debt – where they are unable to be approved for credit cards. But without the credit available to pay towards every month, they are not able to make headway in proving responsible borrowing and payment and therefore increase their credit score.
Secured credit cards are credit cards with set limits – the amount of which the cardholder must match with an upfront deposit into a secured savings account held by the lender. This money acts as protection for the lender; should the borrower default they can recoup their money. For the cardholder, secured credit cards offer a second chance and a way to begin to rebuild their credit.

Getting engaged is a wonderful time in anyone’s life; the excitement of planning a wedding and the anticipation of spending your life with someone that you love. But when the honeymoon is over and the excitement of wedding festivities begin to dwindle, many newly married couples find that they don’t know as much about each other as they had originally thought. In fact, the most commonly revealed after-wedding secret is the fact that one or both of the people in a relationship has been carrying significant debt; something that they may now reveal as the couple prepares to combine finances.
This can have devastating effects on a newly married couple. First and foremost, there is the fact that there was a secret between you and a pretty serious secret at that. And secondly, there is the fact that one person’s credit report is bound to have an impact on their spouse especially as they go about their lives together and begin to combine their income.
It is always important that all financial discussions are had prior to a wedding; a discussion during which each of you can reveal your own personal relationship with money – how you feel about carrying debt, your feelings about saving money, and so forth.
This is the time when compromises and decisions must be made; consider this discussion to be as important as anything else in terms of making your marriage work in the long term. After all, money issues are one of the top reasons why marriages eventually end; by talking about your financial expectations up front you can ensure that all issues are out on the table before your marriage.
Finally, it makes sense for each person to get a free credit report in order to check their credit standing before the marriage actually takes place. Free credit reports will allow a soon-to-be-married couple the opportunity to know where they each stand before they combine their lives and their finances.

Credit is very important. Having credit allows you to buy a home and obtain a home loan and mortgage. Various businesses or corporations review credit history for employment eligibility. Credit history is reviewed in order for a person to buy a car, obtain a personal loan, or seek out additional credit cards in their future. Reviewing the person’s credit report is a way for a lending company to determine the amount of risk of that individual; risk associated with the likelihood of that specific person being able to make their payments on time.
Keeping abreast of your credit score through a free credit report is extremely beneficial in helping individuals review the status of their credit score and the history of their credit. Reviewing a free credit report also gives people the opportunity to see where they are able to make improvements.
Different free credit report providers offer different levels of services. There are three main credit reporting agencies, which include Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. You can contact each individual agency for a free credit report or there are many providers that are marketed on the Internet, radio and television that advertise their ability to provide you with a free credit report.
When obtaining a free credit report, one should understand that the credit score may be different from each of the main credit reporting companies and the credit score can change over time. While reviewing the free credit report make certain to see if there are any erroneous account balances, late payments, or credit cards that were never opened in your name. Credit score ranges and will affect the terms and interest rates made available to you.
Credit scores will affect your ability to obtain financing in the future and guide lenders in determining rates and terms of loans. After reviewing a free credit report, always contest any discrepancies to assure you are not accountable as well as improve your overall credit score.

In the last post, we discussed the importance of getting a free credit report every year to stay in touch with what is happening on our credit report and how the financial decisions that we are making are impacting our overall creditworthiness. The three credit bureaus that hold our credit report – Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion – offer consumers a free credit report once within every twelve month period which we can order online through www.annualcreditreport.com. By making sure that we check in with our credit report throughout the year we are ensuring that we take the proper steps to improve our credit score as well as watch out for any potentially damaging credit theft.
This time of year, in particular, is especially important when it comes to taking stock of our free credit reports. This is because we are in the final stretch before the Fall months and the holidays are, essentially, right around the corner. With all the money that we spend around the holiday months it makes sense that we would want to make sure our credit report is in good standing far in advance of those crazy weeks.
To this end, a free credit report today can:
* Tell us our current credit score so that we know what kind of purchasing power we have.
* Alert us to any possible identity theft as any strange activity may give us cause for further investigation.
* Let us know how some of our most recent financial decisions have impacted our overall credit report.
* Show us the progress in improving our credit score and credit report if we are currently taking steps towards credit repair.
The Fall months, and the holidays in particular, can be crazy times. Don’t wait until the last minute to discover that you have problems with your credit. Take the time now to get a free credit report and be on your way to a more sound financial standing.

The summer is winding down like or not and pretty soon Fall will be upon us; a time during which the kids go back to school and the activities and schedules heat up fiercely. Within a few months’ time (hard to believe, but it’s true) the holidays will be upon us and we will face the mighty bills that come with shopping every year. Utilizing this end of summer season may be the time to take advantage of the calm before the storm and improve our credit so that we are in a better financial position come Fall.
The first step in achieving these goals is the procurement of free credit reports. Our credit report is that which documents all of our financial activities throughout our grown life. When we make late payments, borrow too much money, or default on a loan, we risk damage to our credit report. Sometimes we may not even realize that there has been damage to our credit report (especially in the case of a stolen identity). Getting a free credit report will enable us to stay abreast of our current financial situation and take steps to repair our credit.
The three credit bureaus that hold our credit report are Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Each allow consumers a free credit report once within every twelve month period; and these free credit reports can now be accessed online. Consumers can go to www.annualcreditreport.com where they can order a free credit report from each of the credit bureaus or one at a time; in fact, many people choose to order a free credit report from one of each of the credit bureaus every four months allowing them access to their credit report throughout the year.
In the next post, we’ll discuss some of the reasons that a free credit report can help our cause as Fall draws near.

It’s no secret that times are tough at the moment; for most of us this has been a difficult time during which we are doing all that we can to minimize our financial exposure and stay as solvent as possible. Like anything else, this too shall pass and sometime very soon we will be facing a much more financially friendly time period. And when we are, we will hopefully have much more cash in our pockets and many more financial options.
Until then, we should look at this time period as a time during which we can get all our financial ducks in a row. That means that it’s time to buckle down and pay more mind to our budget; and it also means it may be time to give consideration to paying down – or even off – debt so that we can be in a much better financial position when the economy takes an upturn.
Further, it may be time to pay careful attention to our credit report as this can be the most dramatically impacted by our financial decisions. With the frequent procurement of a free credit report we can gage our financial standing – including our credit score – and set forth a plan to raise our score if it could be better. And if our credit score is currently good then we can make a financial plan to keep it that way.
Luckily, it’s easier than ever to get free credit reports as they are offered online through a central website that allows access to all three of the credit bureaus that hold our financial information. We are entitled to a free credit report once within every twelve month period of time which means that we can get a free credit report from each of the credit bureaus every four months and keep abreast of our credit standing during this difficult time.
